Four New Schools Open in 2010
July 8, 2010 - The Wake County Public School System will open four new schools for 2010-11, while more schools are being built and planned. The schools opening this year include two new multi-track, year-round schools, Alston Ridge Elementary and Holly Grove Middle; and two new traditional calendar schools, Mills Park Middle and Heritage High.
The new multi-track, year-round schools will open for the first day on July 9.
Alston Ridge Elementary is a 103,806 square foot school. The design is a reuse of a two-story elementary school prototype used at Banks Road Elementary. The new school is expected to serve more than 400 students this year. The school’s principal is Fran Venezia.
Holly Grove Middle is a 197,071 square foot school. This is the first use of a new middle school prototype design by Skinner Lamm & Highsmith Architects. The school is expected to serve approximately 975 students this year. The school’s principal is Ken Proulx.
The new traditional calendar schools will open for the first day on August 25.
Mills Park Middle is a 197,071 square foot school. This is the second use of a new middle school prototype design by Skinner Lamm & Highsmith Architects. The school is expected to serve more than 1,000 students this year. The school’s principal is Bob Smith.
Heritage High is opening as a new school with its own students this year after serving as swing space for Wake Forest Rolesville High while its campus was renovated. Heritage High is located at 1150 Forestville Road in Wake Forest. The 264,416 square foot school design is the third use of the Knightdale High Prototype design. The school will open with ninth and tenth grade students. The eleventh grade will be added in 2011-12 and the twelfth grade in 2012-13. The site will feature a future Town of Wake Forest ball park. The school’s principal is Mark Savage.
Wake Forest Rolesville High and Bugg Elementary have undergone major renovations.
At Wake Forest Rolesville High, the renovations provide a new multi-story classroom wing, as well as major renovations for all remaining classrooms in the 1958 and 1989 buildings. The school’s renovations provide a new media center, while renovating the auxiliary gym, gym support spaces, and student support services.
At Bugg Elementary, major renovations included constructing 10 new general classrooms and two new Special Programs classrooms, as well as construction of new Physical Education support spaces. The project renovated and expanded the kitchen and constructed a new dining/serving area. The project included upgrading existing classrooms, expanding vehicle circulation and parking and expanding bus circulation.
Wilburn Year-round Elementary will open the new school year in the temporary modular campus on Spring Forest Road. The school moved there in April, as major renovations began for its campus on Saturn Drive.
