    Description

Northwoods Elementary is a true neighborhood school operating on a traditional calendar, with ample parent and community support, and where academic and social growth are equally valued. We are not an overcrowded school with approximately 550 students and this supports a tight-knit community and family-like atmosphere in our school. The fact that we have 12 plus staff members that have relatives that are students in our school further nurtures the family like atmosphere. Our strong positive school culture saw us have a 6% teacher turnover rate versus 11% for WCPSS in 2010-11. For two consecutive years we have received the highest recognition from the state for our Positive Behavior Support Program for students and staff - we are an Exemplar School.

Also, we are blessed with strong PTA and community support. Our PTA has at least 255 paid members and each year fundraises considerable amounts of money to invest in school resources and our students. The PTA funds and organizes a strong cultural arts program which entails having a writer and artist in residence, each for a week, and many visiting performers and shows for the students. Our students attend the following specials on a rotational basis: Art, Music, PE, Technology (3rd-5th) and Media/Library (KG-2nd). Grade levels typically go on three field trips a year. Last year our 5th grade toured Washington DC. Finally, our students have access to a brand new $70,000 playground and large school fields.

We believe in continuous improvement and the need to expose our students to 21st century tools and learning. Our school has wireless connectivity, 9 Smartboards, 26 wireless airslates, 2 mobile laptop labs, a computer lab with numerous desktops, various flip cameras, 2 classroom response systems, and most classrooms have 4-6 desktop computers for students, document cameras, LCD projectors and access to United Streaming educational videos, and so on.
