    Description

Helen Y. Stough Elementary School was built in 1968 and named after lifelong educator and Raleigh City Schools Board of Education member. Stough is a Global Themed Initiative school that has approximately 600 students in grades K-5. It is located in the heart of the Crabtree Valley shopping, dining and entertainment area.

The school is bordered by beautiful parks, including Laurel Hills, as well as supportive corporate partners from the Highwoods Business Park center. The curriculum at Helen Y. Stough emphasizes focused lessons that are aligned to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (SCOS). A variety of assessments are used to differentiate the instruction of content, skills, materials and activities for all students.

    Curriculum: Global Schools Collaborative Network

To be globally competitive, students must understand that activities or decisions made in one part of the world can affect the environments, economies, and people in other parts of the world. This understanding is central to global studies.

The WCPSS Global Schools Network will be a group of 17 schools dedicated to challenging students to become globally aware citizens. Study of the world's cultures, religions, literature, history and language will prepare students to confront global issues.

The schools in this network teach international content across the curriculum and at all levels to expand students' knowledge of other countries and cultures. Through a partnership with VIF International Education, a teacher exchange program will recruit visiting teachers from places as far as South Africa, Spain and China to teach your child.

    Each school will provide:

    • Foreign language instruction

    • Integrated global lessons

    • Visiting Foreign Exchange Faculty

    • iPad carts (30 iPads) for each grade level

One middle and one high school will be added to this network in May 2011.

    Academic Highlights

Helen Y. Stough Elementary joined Wake County Public School System’s Global Schools Collaborative Network School in the spring of 2011. The Global Schools Collaborative Network’s goal is to promote and support global education. Stough will work to prepare students to compete globally through a number of means, including 21 st century learning tools for its students. The school boasts a 30-computer lab station, over 25 Promethean Boards and response kits, 30 media center research stations, 4-5 computers in every classroom and 6 iPad carts with 30 iPads for each grade level.

    Extra-Curricular Highlights

Stough provides a host of activities and programs designed to address the unique interests and talents of the whole child. In addition to our visual and performing arts programs, the PTA develops and funds an annual calendar of performances and programs for the students throughout the school year. This calendar of events brings local and national artists to the school for operas, dancing, puppet shows, storytelling, batiking, poetry, origami, writing and more. And, in an effort to develop and refine leadership skills among our students, a variety of student organizations are provided for student participation. Some include: student council, safety patrol, peer mediators, Spanish club, and chorus.
